How Caroline Durkee of The Freckled Life Balances Her Blog With Her 9-5

Posted on
Welcome to In My Social Sunday, a series on the Social Sunday blog where we speak to influencers, inspiring women, and fans of the brand to get to know them on a deeper level.

This week we’re so excited to chat with Caroline Durkee, the blogger behind The Freckled Life. Caroline lives in NYC and blogs about fashion, beauty and lifestyle. Get to know her from her spirit animal is to how she defines her personal style.

Who are you and what do you do?
I'm Caroline a freckled Brooklynite who is a graphic designer for Lord & Taylor by day and a fashion/beauty/lifestyle blogger by night.

How did you first learn about Social Sunday?
I attended a We Are Women Owned pop-up and fell in love with all the designs!
What is your favorite Social Sunday design and why?
Definitely "Support Your Local Girl Gang"— I think it's an adorable play on that phrase and love the message behind it. I love showing my support for female empowerment and collaboration.

Take us through an average day in your life.
From ~9:30 am (I'm allllways running late) to 6:00 pm, you'll find me at the Lord & Taylor HQ offices located in the Tribeca neighborhood of downtown NYC. I design both print and digital assets for the marketing teamfrom direct mail pieces like catalogues to emails to website content. I don't usually have more than two or three meetings a day, which as a creative is really important since I gotta get in the zone. Most of the day, you'll find me at my desk with my pink headphones on listening to Spotify and whipping up designs. We sit on a 20-something floor and I've been blessed with a window seat so you can definitely include daydreaming while gazing out at the city as a daily activity of mine as well...Once I get home to my cozy studio in DUMBO, I crack open a La Croix (apricot is my latest fave), plop down on my couch, and work on my blog: The Freckled Life. This could mean infinite things (and my blog to-do list usually is infinite...) from editing photos, brainstorming content ideas, writing posts, engaging on social media, to a WHOLE lot more! It's a lotta work building a business on top of have a full 9-6 job (that I'm also extremely passionate about) and quite exhausting—but so rewarding and I am thankful for every single day I get to do both :)

How would you describe your personal style?
Refined downtown—I like classic, elevated silhouettes paired with casual, dressed-down elements to create a nice city-chic balance.

What does your ideal Sunday look like?
A couple swipes of mascara and blush and I'm out the door to a cute brunch spot in the city (ideally sporting a new outfit), then a walk around my neighborhood of DUMBO Brooklyn (it's got some of the best trails and city views!), and wind down before the work week with some TV (nine times out of 10 it'll be The Office re-runs: best. show. ever.)

If you could learn the answer to one question you have about the future, what would you ask?
I think I would just want to know what advice my 40/50-year old self would have for me at my age now (26). I've done so much growing and reflecting during my twenties and already have SO much advice I wish I could share with my younger self.

What was your AIM icon and username?
I don't remember the icon but my AIM username was blackbeltcutie65and now here's a fun fact for you so I can further explain: I did Tae Kwon Do for several years and technically have a second degree black belt in it! But I swear it’s not as impressive as it sounds, haha!

What’s your spirit animal?
Leslie Knope

Do you have a favorite quote or saying?
"She believed she could, so she did"
