October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—we are all affected by breast cancer in some way and getting involved in raising awareness for the disease and donating to its research and prevention is as easy as sending out a tweet or hitting publish on a Facebook fundraising post. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women. The risk of a woman in the United States to develop breast cancer is 12%—almost a one in eight chance.
Thanks to the internet, you can empower breast cancer patients and survivors right now as you sit at your computer or hold your smart phone. From viral hashtags to online exclusive products, here are six ways you can support breast cancer awareness, research, and prevention from your desktop.
1.Donate to a American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Team
The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer holds noncompetitive three to five mile walks for people to come together to raise awareness and research funds for breast cancer. To make a stride against breast cancer, joining a team in a walk or volunteering at the event are amazing ways to contribute. Making an online donation to support a team’s fundraising efforts is also just as valid of a contribution.
Social Sunday will actually be participating in the October 21st breast cancer walk i Brooklyn, NY. You can help us raise money for the American Cancer Society via our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Team Page.
2. Tweet #IDriveFor
Chevrolet is a supporter of the previously mentioned American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for eight years. For every tweet or Instagram post that uses the hashtag #IDriveFor, Chevy will donate $5 to the American Cancer Society until they reach their $400,000 goal.
3. Purchase GLAMGLOW’s Breast Cancer Campaign BUBBLESHEET
Online shopping support a good cause? Count us in! The beloved skincare line redesigned the packaging of its BUBBLESHEET mask to have a pink ribbon on it in support of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign. I actually tried BUBBLESHEET a while back (with the original packaging) and it was super fun, yet effective; it made me look like a cloud when the mask oxygenated and got bubbly and left my skin squeaky clean once removed.
The Breast Cancer Campaign BUBBLESHEET is available online only. For each purchase, GLAMGLOW will donate 20% of the purchase price to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, for up to $50,000.
4. Use #TimeToEndBreastCancer in Instagram captions
The Estée Lauder Companies have been especially involved in breast cancer awareness. As a matter of fact, Evelyn H. Lauder, the founder of Estée Lauder, co-created the pink ribbon in 1992! This year, as part of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, using the hashtag #TimeToEndBreastCancer donates $25 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s research. The goal is $26,000, to celebrate the company’s 26 years in fundraising for the cause.
5. Donate to METAvivor
METAvivor works towards the awareness, research, and support of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), or Stage IV breast cancer. MBC is deadly, yet not many people broach the subject, even during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In addition, only 2-5% of breast cancer research donations are used for studying metastatic breast cancer.
100% of your money to METAvivor is directly used to obtain grants for Stage IV breast cancer research. You can donate and learn more here.
6. Purchase from Social Sunday’s Courage Collection
Social Sunday designed a tee to honor all the courageous women who have fought or are currently fighting breast cancer. 10% of proceeds from this collection will go to American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
You can shop the collection here!
